TORC Recycling Guide

Plastics - All plastics numbered 1 – 7 are acceptable for recycling.  Please rinse and remove caps and rings; labels may remain.  Flatten as much as possible.  Plastic caps should be placed in the trash, currently these are not required by law to be recycled.

Aluminum - We don't pay for aluminum cans, but we do accept them for recycling at no charge. If a magnet sticks, it's not aluminum. Please, no aluminum foil in the recycling bin.

Tin cans - Food cans only. Rinse, remove labels and flatten.

Aerosol cans - These can be recycled with the tin cans. Do not puncture them. They can also be taken to the Dane County Clean Sweep Collection Facility. Please see the Clean Sweep article in this Recycling Guide.

Paint cans - These are considered trash only if they are empty and the paint is dry. For cans with paint still in them, take them to Dane County Clean Sweep.

Newspaper - Newsprint must be bundled and dry. Keep bundles no thicker than 6 inches. Please do not mix other paper with the newsprint.

Magazines & Phonebooks - They may be mixed. They should also be bundled and tied.

Corrugated cardboard - All cardboard must be tied in bundles. No cereal boxes, detergent boxes, tissue boxes or beverage boxes.

Glass - We recycle jars and bottles only. Always rinse the bottles and remove caps and rings. Always sort by color: clear, green and brown. Light bulbs, dishes, glasses, mirrors or window glass must be recycled elsewhere or disposed of as trash.

Scrap metal - We accept any scrap iron, steel, copper or other metal. We don't accept compressors or motors.

Motor oil - Used motor oil is accepted, but only bring in used oil that is free of other liquids, such as antifreeze. Either reuse your used motor oil container or dispose of it properly in the trash compactor. Don't leave it sitting near the used oil tank.

Leaves and grass clippings - Put any compostable material in the compost pile at the transfer site. Always dispose of the plastic bags (or other container) in the compactor or appropriate site.

Brush and wood - We take only brush and limbs that are free of soil. We also take clean, unpainted lumber at the burn pile. We cannot take stumps or painted lumber. Dane County's Rodefeld Landfill will take stumps.

Tires - We charge $2 for auto tires, $5 for truck tires and $10 for tractor tires. Tires can also be taken to the Rodefeld Landfill for 85¢ each for auto tires, or $85 per ton for all tires.

Appliances - We do accept appliances for a fee. Several private recyclers are willing to pick them up for a small fee.
