TOWN OF OREGON PARK COMMITTEE
Monday, March 28, 2016 @ 7:00pm
Present: Steve Root, Robert Johnson, Josh Nordstrom, Al Miller
Absent: Jeff Nelson
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. after a site visit to the Town Park for the potential location of a disc golf course.
The minutes from the previous month were approved as written.
Pat Blake discussed the location of a disc golf course in the Town Park. He presented an 18-hole disc golf course and a 9-hole disc golf course plan. He didn’t make a 6-hole course design. There are 19 baskets that includes one practice basket.
Amy Miller said that the high school would use the course as part of a gym class. The bigger picture is supporting active families. She would like to have a bag with discs to expose families to the sport. Pat suggested hosting a day to teach disc golf.
Andy discussed his interactions with local businesses for support of the disc golf course. Local businesses would sponsor tee signs at the holes. The money could be set aside for maintenance. If the course becomes a destination course with 18-holes, the players will stay awhile to play. The Oregon Chamber Course and Rotary would support the course. Right now there are eleven (11) people signed up for sponsorships. There are other fundraising events suggested to raise money for the course.
The annual maintenance is brush cutting, mowing and fallen trees on fairways. The main added cost is the mowing. The course will still be played if the grass is long.
The cost of construction of the course was discussed. The cost to the town is $19,000, however there are fundraising ideas to reduce that cost.
There are short tees and long tees to make the course more family friendly. There is an ability to change the pin position on the course. There could be community events held to introduce the sport to families.
The tee sponsorships would be $100 per year. Any increase in the cost of sponsorship could be difficult. The tee signs are developed with plexiglass to include the sponsorship information. Disc golf players, community members and neighbors could help with the maintenance of the course. The proposed bike path would connect people with the park. It would be hard to have pay to play at this location. Instead of a donation box, a sign asking to stop by the town hall.
Steve would like to suggest a field trip to Green Lake disc golf course on Friday, April 15, 2016 at 9:00 a.m.
The next park meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, 2016.
Steve will present a walk up entrance design to the Town Park next month.
Al moved to adjourn and Josh seconded the motion. Motion carried.
