TOWN OF OREGON PARK COMMITTEE
Monday March 24, 2014 @ 6:30pm
Present: Steve Root, Allen Miller, Bob Johnson, Josh Nordstrum, Jeff Nelson
The meeting was called to order.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read silently. The park minutes were approved with amending the location of the rope pullers from Hillcrest Park to Kennedy Park. The new sentence will read, “After the snow is gone, Steve will contact the rope puller to get back into setting up at Kennedy Park.”
Steve gave a recap on the current Eagle Scout projects on hold: Gazebo at Bi-Centennial Park - Steve learned that Jeremy Bono has changed from Troop 50 to Troop 168. He will contact Troop 168 on the status of the project. Trail Improvement at Bi-Centennial Park – no new information. Exercise Stations at Kennedy Park – Steve is meeting with Mike this week to discuss welding that needs to be done for one of the exercise stations.
Steve made a request for a fire number at Anderson Park. Al Miller attended the last Friends of Anderson Park meeting. He reported that a survey of all the trees and plants in the wooded area was completed and the information was put into GIS format. They discovered pokeweed that is hazardous to animals. The group talked about linking up some of the trails and having a picnic area. Currently the parking lot is a mud lot and they requested the town to haul gravel. Steve will follow up with Roe Parker. The group is hosting third graders from Brooklyn Elementary to pull weeds.
Steve asked for a little background on each of the committee members. Jeff Nelson reported that he retired three years ago and has lived on Sheil Road for 30 years. Jeff asked Steve to send a thank you note to Cheryl Ayers who cleaned up broken glass in the parking lot at the town park in the fall. Jeff also received a complaint from a neighbor on Ralph Road about the parking of large equipment on the road from a resident that runs a business out of his home. Josh knows the homeowner and will contact him. Josh Nordstrum grew up in Wisconsin Rapids and works for the Dane County sheriff’s department. He has lived in the Town of Oregon for 4 years with his wife and two young boys. Al Miller retired in 2001 and has been working on restoring the prairie at Lerner Park in the Village of Oregon with the Oregon Rotary Club. Bob Johnson worked at MATC for 30 years and his wife, Chris, worked as a teacher in Oregon. After Bob retired he became a volunteer firefighter. He keeps busy with his windmill and is an amateur bee keeper. Steve Root worked for the WI DOT for 34 years in surveying and mapping. He has been the chair of the Town Park Committee since the inception of the committee in 1985.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.
Steve will set a date to walk the parks with Josh on a Saturday and welcomes everyone to join them.
Steve has two volunteers wanting to do clean-up at the Bi-Centennial Park.
Al moved to adjourn and Bob seconded the motion. Motion carried.
