TOWN OF OREGON PARK COMMITTEE
Monday November 19, 2012 @6:30pm
Present: Janine Jensen, Mark Brylski, Steve Root, Bob Johnson
The meeting was called to order.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read and were approved as read with the minor change that the date at the top of the report should have read October 15 and not the September date.
Steve reported that Dane County has possible funds available to assist with the bike path that the Village is creating and Jerry Bollig, Dane County Supervisor is going to try to acquire additional funds for this path.
Steve met with Phil Petersen at the old creamery that he is interested in having the committee consider making it into a “park” type spot. This creamery is located in Storytown. All that’s left of the creamery is the smoke stack. The piece of property on which it is located is approximately 1 acre, but the owner is not interested in selling, but may consider a 99-year lease. Phil indicated that the Oregon Historical Society has highlighted this creamery in their brochure, and if the committee is interested, Phil would take the lead in working on this. Phil would like to see the committee provide a sign about the creamery at a minimum and additional restoration if interested. The committee decided that this was not something that could be decided at this time and the issue was tabled. Steve also mentioned to Phil about the committee’s involvement in the Oregon bike path, and Phil will consider the use of some of his land for a possible extension of the trail.
Steve reported that the Eagle Scout candidates did not appear at the last Town Board, because they were involved in the play at Oregon High School, but will hopefully appear at the next meeting.
The two recent Eagle Scout projects in Ravenoaks, but Collin Schmidt and Mike Debaker are completed. Steve recently received a phone call from a candidate, Tom Richard who indicated that he was ready to proceed with his project in the Town Park. Steve gave him the go-ahead, and he has completed his project and Steve is very pleased with the project. Tom will appear at the next committee meeting to make his report. However, when Steve went to the Town Park to review the project, he discovered a very well built structure. It is very visible from the path. Steve asked the members to go to view the structure before the discussion on what to do with it.
Eagle Scout candidate, Mitch Condon was going to come to the meeting to get Steve’s signature on his project but he couldn’t attend. He will attempt to come in soon.
Alex LeBrun will be attending a meeting very soon to give his final report and then he will need to make his final presentation to the Town Board.
Steve indicated that he is attending meetings for both Troop 50 and 168 and making a pitch for any Eagle Scout projects that could be done next spring. The reason for this appeal is that the DNR gave the Town of Oregon an extension of Phase 2 until June 30, 2013 and any additional Eagle Scout project could be added in. After June 30th, the committee will get its reimbursement from the DNR, which could amount to $20,000.
Steve reported that the Town Board approved $4000 per year for recreational transportation fees as part of the annual budget. These fees will be available to help with bike paths.
Steve will be meeting on November 28th with Phil Van Kampen, Steve Staton and Mike Gracz from the Village about the proposed bike path.
Steve is going to work on the plaques for the Eagle Scout projects.
The next meeting will be Monday, December 17, 2012 at 6:30pm.
Mark moved to adjourn and bob seconded the motion. Motion carried.
