TOWN OF OREGON PARK COMMITTEE
Monday August 20, 2012 @6:30pm
Present: Janine Jensen, Mark Brylski, Steve Root, Bob Johnson, Raandi Schmidt
Also present: Collin Schmidt, Eagle Scout candidate
The meeting was called to order.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read and were approved as read.
Collin Schmidt, Eagle Scout candidate presented his project proposal within Ravenoaks Park. Because he has helped clear trails in the past, his project is to clear approximately 325 feet of trails within the Park. John Beasley agreed to help with his brush clearing device and created 4 foot trails, after clearing very thorny brush. After the brush was cleared, Collin has installed trail markers of treated 4x4’s and has nailed them into the ground. The town crew has delivered wood chips, which will be placed on the trails, after they are sprayed with “Pasture Pro”. Collin reported that his trails could be extended in the future if needed. When this project is completed, Mike Debaker’s proposed project for new erosion bars in the trail system will begin. Collin has some left over lumber, so Mike’s project will make use of them. Collin feels that his project will benefit his neighborhood and will encourage visitors to the park to follow the existing trails. The total cost of the project is approximately $500 and he has one work day left to complete the work. Collin asked permission to create a trail entrance sign and the committee felt it would be a good addition to the project. Collin also informed the committee that he wanted to host a “trail opening” celebration, which will be held on September 22nd at 3pm. Steve suggested contacting the Oregon Observer to either have them take some photos, or see if some photos could be submitted for print. Collin will make his final presentation to the committee on September 24th, and then report to the Town Board on November 7th.
Steve reported that he has received a phone call from a member of Troop 50 who has indicated an interest in a project involving trails. Steve will meet with the scout later in September to discuss the possibilities.
Alex LeBrun, who lives near the Bicentennial Park, met with Steve on July 31st to look into possible new trails within the park for his Eagle Scout project. Alex was not able to attend the meeting, but he created a printed proposal for the committee to review. Steve reported that the first 100 feet of each trail entrance is extremely overgrown with the same thorny brush that was found in Ravenoaks. Alex is proposing to widen the trails with a brush cutter, pull up the existing bars, clean up the trails and spray them before laying fabric and chips. His proposal is also to add a trash barrel at each entrance. His requested budget is $1400. Mark Brylski moved to accept the proposal and Bob Johnson seconded the motion. Motion carried.
The town crew reported to Steve that the new timbers installed in the Della Street Park that holds the sand need to be secured. It was decided that this work, plus the necessary repairs in the Town Park will be done on the work day which is scheduled for September 29th at 8AM.
The bids for the work on the Town Park parking lot and the road re-surfacing, which came to $4378.71 was presented to the Town Board. The Town Board is interested in sharing the cost, but tabled the item until a second bid could be attained. Once the amount is approved, the park funds will cover the initial cost and the township will budget their portion for next year and then reimburse the park funds
The next meeting will be Monday, September 24, 2012 at 6:30pm.
Raandi moved to adjourn and Mark seconded the motion. Motion carried.
