TOWN OF OREGON PARK COMMITTEE
Monday March 14, 2011 @6:30pm
Present: Steve Root, Janine Jensen, Mark Brylski, Bob Johnson
Also present: Chris Johnson, Tim LeBrun, Scout Master, Chris Shrader, Eagle Scout Candidate
The meeting was called to order by Steve Root.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read. Bob moved to approve the minutes. Mark seconded the motion.
Chris Shrader’s original proposal for his Eagle Scout project was for the renovation of the Della Street Park. However due to the extensiveness of the project and his own admitted procrastination, this project is no longer possible. Chris explained the difficulties associated with the existing equipment. The fall zone (foot print) for the swing set does not meet current code. This means trees are too close to the existing swing set and also there is not enough space between the swings and the slide. Due to these circumstances, Chris requested suggestions for a project that he could complete before May 31st, which is his 18thbirthday, the scout imposed time limit. It was recommended that Chris take on the project of tree planting in the Town Park. Steve has sent an email to Kathy Esch, who has agreed to take on the role of advisor for this project. She and Jack Mitchell have agreed to work with Chris and the committee to decide where to plant the trees, what type of trees and how many to purchase. Kathy has toured McKay Nursery and they have some great large trees that are available to government purchase for $30 per bare-root tree. It was decided that the number of trees would be determined by what the Scout council determines meets the requirements for an Eagle project.
Steve presented to the Town Board the 2 quotations from Nicholas Tree Services, which included $4200 for the dead tree removal and $800 for trimming 3 really nice, old oak trees in Ravenoaks. Steve reported that the work will be done beginning March 15th.
A former Eagle Scout, Jason Oelke contacted Steve because he didn’t see his Eagle Scout project listed on the board outside of the Town Hall. Jason was an Eagle Scout in 1989 and did a project including trail development along the Nine Springs E-Way. He scanned his project and Scout certificate and sent them to Steve, who verified that this was an Eagle Scout project. Steve has had a plaque made with the date of 7-24-89, and it is ready to be installed on the board. It was evident how important these scout projects are to the young men who complete them.
Steve received a phone call from Mitch Auping, who is working on his project, which includes benches for the Town Park. Steve has agreed to meet with him on March 15thto get an update on the status of the project. These benches will be located in the open areas of the park and will be anchored down.
Tom Richards, an Eagle Scout candidate, whose project involves a new trail in the Town Park and Matt Schmidt from Troop 168, whose project involves trails in Ravnoaks Park, will be attending the next meeting.
The Oasis Club at OHS and its advisor, Randal Smith, are ready to begin their project in late April. They are interested in doing a service project in the Town Park, in an area that hasn’t had a lot of work done. Kathy Esch and Jack Mitchell have agreed to mark plants that should be retained and then the Oasis Club would remove undesirable growth.
The committee had received an email from a resident, Pat Brummel, who had requested that the committee consider purchasing land for a shooting range. However, before the meeting, Ms. Brummel came to the Town Hall to meet with Steve and understood the cost associated with this, and suggested that her request be tabled indefinitely.
The next meeting will be Monday, April 25, 2011 at 6:30 pm.
Mark moved to adjourn and Bob seconded the motion. Motion carried.
