Monday April 28, 2008 @ 6:30PM
Present: Steve Root, Janine Jensen, Mark Brylski, Bob Johnson Also present: Gary Wackett
The meeting was called to order by Steve Root.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read. Motion made to approve as read. Motion carried. It was noted that the April 7th meeting was rescheduled to April 28th.
Steve reported on a disturbing incident of vandalism that occurred in Kennedy Park. Kathy Esch reported that a neighbor of the park admitted to cutting down 2 trees that were located in the park because they might block his view as they grew. This neighbor had previously complained about the location of the trees and they had been moved. The committee agreed to pursue legal options. Gary Wackett will schedule a meeting with Kathy and take her statement before proceeding.
On a positive note, there doesn't appear to be any vandalism to report in the Town Park since the tree planting, which was very successful. There were nearly 40 people who assisted with the planting and to date, all trees seem to be fine. However, the committee agreed that a higher level of attention will be needed watching the park from now until graduation.
Steve reported that the Town Board is hiring part time help for the summer. One part time employee has been hired to help in the parks as soon as he's returned from college. This employee will be using a bobcat to move the wood chips that are in the Town Park and place them on the trails, and those wood chips in Kennedy Park to be placed around the equipment. He will also spray the wood chips with RoundUp to eliminate weeds. With the addition of this employee, the need for a work day by the committee will be eliminated. This employee will spend much of his day in the parks, but will also do other tasks for the township.
Steve reported that there is a tree in the Town Park which is located near a power line and there is some concern about its ability to remain standing. Steve will contact Alliant Energy for their assessment of the situation. Steve will also contact the State Arborist to have him look at the Cottonwood tree with the broken branch to determine if it needs to be removed.
Steve will be meeting with Troop 50 to encourage Eagle Scout projects which can be used to match the DNR Phase 2 matching funds.
The town has received inquiries about the possibility of renting one or more of the parks for events such as graduation parties. There currently is no policy in the town regarding rentals. But Steve has told the individuals that there are no facilities in our parks, including restrooms or shelters. This may eliminate further interest in rentals for the time being.
Bob has offered to lay a cement pad, 12 X 12 for the picnic table. He recommends hiring a concrete provider to bring in the amount of cement after he sets the forms. He will do this as soon as it dries out.
The next meeting will be June 2, 2008 @ 6:30pm.
Mark moved to adjourn and Bob seconded the motion. Motion carried.
