Town of Oregon
Park Committee Meeting Minutes
April 23, 2007 @ 7:00 PM

Present: Steve Root, Janine Jensen, Bob Johnson, Mark Brylski
Also present: Justin Miller, various Scout representatives, Pen Beasley, Mrs. Brylski

The meeting was called to order by Steve Root.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read. Mark requested that an addition be added, "Mark agreed to look into gathering information for park resources". Bob moved to approve with the correction, and Mark seconded. Motion carried.

Justin Miller approached the committee about his interest in an Eagle Scout project. He is interested in coordinating a controlled prairie burn within the Bicentennial Park. Steve informed the scout that the best time of the year for this type of project is spring, with fall being the second choice. He also informed him that the sumac that is prevalent in the prairie needs to be eliminated before the burn. At this point, Steve recommended that the scout think about the fall as the earliest to proceed with this project. He also informed the scout that the last Eagle Scout coordinated the burn with the Oregon Fire Department. That time, the department was able to bring the necessary water to the site with a truck, but this time it will probably need to be carried in. Mark suggested that the scout start the planning for the burn now with the idea of completing the project in the fall. Bob, a Brooklyn fire volunteer, recommended that Justin contact the Oregon Fire Chief to see if they would be willing to assist with this project. After some consideration, Justin decided to try to coordinate the burn for the fall.

Steve reported that a scout master from Stoughton indicated that there is an Eagle Scout candidate who lives in the town of Oregon, but is a member of the Stoughton troop and is possibly interested in a project within the township. Steve is waiting to hear from the scout.

Town Park:
The work dates that will be May 5th @ 8AM, with a rain date of May 12th, for work primarily in the Town Park, such as pouring the 5 cement pads for the picnic tables, bench and bike rack. Steve reported that the town crew will see to it that the picnic tables are returned to the park. In regards to the potential striping of the parking lot, the Town of Rutland has a machine that can paint it if our town crew can lay it out; therefore, this project will not be hired out. Steve hasn't heard from Kathy Esch yet regarding possible placement of trees around the playground equipment. Steve would like the committee to consider the possibility of planting established trees around the equipment. This will take some consideration of the necessity of watering the trees.

Bicentennial Park:
The turn-around needs to be re-surfaced and will get new gravel, when the town crew can get to it.

The stickers indicating "Sunrise to Sunset" have arrived. Bob placed one on a sign to test it and it works well. The stickers will be installed soon.

Raandi Schmidt sent word that she will contact area Cub Scout packs about our work dates to see if they'd be interested in this as a service project.

Steve is currently reviewing the impact fee information and will continue to work on our response.

Mark has gathered park resource information and shared the list with the committee.

The next meeting will be May 21st at 7:00pm.

Bob moved to adjourn and Mark seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Respectfully submitted,

Janine Jensen
