Farmers Underclaiming their Farmland Preservation Tax Credit

Employees at DATCP noted recently that a number of farmers in Dane County significantly underclaimed tax credits using old form Scedule FC instead of the new Schedule FC-A form that is now in place.

farm imageSchedule FC is supposed to be only for people with old agreements and there are none in Dane County. A report shows that about 2,600 persons in southern Wisconsin claimed under FC last year. That SEVERELY reduced their tax credit.

If you are in Dane County, and you own land that is zoned A-1(exclusive) or A-3 under the Dane County Zoning Ordinance, you should be filing Schedule FC-A, NOT the old Schedule FC. This will make you eligible for the higher $7.50 per acre per year tax credit approved as part of recent changes to the state Farmland Preservation Law. Note that Rutland has Exclusive Ag Zoning, which was adopted in 1978. We believe there are no private agreements so most likely no one in Rutland should be using the old form.

Schedule FC should be used only for landowners who are claiming the smaller credit available to farmers who are not under exclusive agricultural zoning and who have an agreement with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
2011 Schedule FC-A forms are available here:
